April 2023

Season Kick Off

Oil up your chains and lay your new kit across the bed to be ready for the GII season to kick off.  Our club’s season is officially starting this month! Come out to Patuxent River Park in Upper Marlboro on Saturday, April 22nd to kick off 2023 at our Season Opener. In true family style, bring a dish and fill your belly after a short fun ride.  RSVP on Meetup with what you’re bringing.

“Roll Call!” Wear your Green Ride Long Kit if you have it or any GII Kit in your closet so we can recognize the family.

Don’t forget that the day after our Season Opener, we’re heading over to our Adopted Road to clean up Duley Station Rd.

This month, check our Meetup Page because our weekly rides will start to happen again, like Monday Motivation, Monday Chillax, Tuesday Hill Training, Hump Day Newbie Ride, Trash Talking Thursdays, Trailblazers, N.E.O. Road, and of course our Saturday road rides.

Community Outreach

Capital Area Food Bank on Friday, April 7th from 1-4pm. We are volunteering at the National Food Bank in Washington, DC helping to sort donated food products. Participants signed up on Meetup and can’t wait to represent GII in the community.

Adopt-A-Road Clean Up Day on Sunday, April 23rd from 10am-12pm. As you know, GII adopted a portion of Duley Station Rd.  Our first clean up date to kick off our riding season will be the day after our season opener, Sunday April 23 10a-12pm  We want to show up in full force so that the local residents can see how the cycling community is really more than riding.  Additional information will be on Meet-up for members and guests to volunteer as more details unfold.

GII is working with Coach Anthony Carter and a local elementary school to give away 5 bicycles to deserving kids who excelled in academics.  The bike giveaway will be followed up by a bike rodeo to help educate the children on bicycle safety and riding.

Backyard Boogie

The Backyard Boogie is coming back in full effect and will be held in Prince George’s County, MD from August 11th -13th.  Tickets will go on sale May 1st and there will be discounts for early bird registrations. The 2023 event will be better than before.  There was so much great feedback from the 2022 event that we had to do a repeat.  We also listened to things that could have gone better and are working those things in too.  This year we will have events for families and kids to help enlighten the community on the benefits of cycling. For a recap of the 2022 event go HERE and to stay current with the 2023 plans click HERE. More details to unfold as the time gets closer!

Race Team News

In early March, the GII Race Team traveled to Richmond for its annual Spring Training Camp.  The four-day immersive cycling event consisted of rides around Richmond and the surrounding countryside, sparring with each and a few local friends, working on race tactics, discussing cycling and racing theory, and finally a mock crit.

March also kicked off the season for many of our racers. The team raced the Langley Speedway Crit, the Bryant Park Crit, the Chapel Hill Cycling Classic, the Lucarelli & Castaldi Branchbrook Training Series, and several Trade Zone Training Races.  A testament to the team’s hard work in the off-season, a number of our racers finished in the top 10 throughout the March races, with the ladies bringing home another first-place finish of the season (Crystal Carey-Langley Women’s Master’s).  Also of note, Akilah Matthews and Ashli Savoy finished second and third in their respective master’s races at Langley.

Over the next month, the team has races up and down the mid- Atlantic from Newport News, VA, to Providence, PA.  The first local area road race in Poolesville is on 4/8.  Come out, show your support, and enjoy the fun!
