Bicycle Safety

Safety Briefing:

GII requires all participants to adhere to the safety regulations set by USA Cycling, the state of Maryland and Getting It In

Cyclists, Inc.  It is imperative that we conduct ourselves in a safe, predictable manner when on the road, not only to protect each other but to serve as a model for cyclists across our area.  Cyclists, drivers, and onlookers are watching.  All cyclists participating in GII sponsored rides should adhere to the following guidance:

  • Wear a certified cycling helmet
  • Ensure you can hear warnings and safety instructions by keeping at least one ear free from ear-buds and/or headphones
  • Call out “Car Back” or “Car Up” when a vehicle approaches
  • When you hear “Car Back” or “Car Up”, ride single file
  • Call out potholes and other road hazards for other cyclists
  • Obey all traffic signs and signals, do not run red lights or stop signs
  • Ride in the direction of traffic at all times and do not cross solid yellow lines or into the on-coming traffic lanes
  • Ride no more than two cyclists abreast and allow cars behind to pass
  • Announce when approaching and passing other cyclists
  • Pass other cyclists on the left and avoid passing on the right
  • Call out your intentions to riders behind you when slowing, changing lanes, or stopping
  • Use traffic hand signals when appropriate
  • Call out to cyclists/pedestrians you are about to pass by announcing “On your left”
  • Ride defensively and make smart decisions concerning safety and courtesy towards other cyclists, pedestrians and motorists by maintaining a “Share the Road” mentality
