Community Outreach

GII likes to give back to the community with a focus on those areas that we ride through.  With GII's Community Outreach Program, we have established several initiatives that we support every year like the toy and coat drives.  Other initiatives are planned as the need arises.  With the help of volunteers and club members, we are able to support these initiatives that help inspire and uplift those that are in need.

Capital Area Food Bank

On Friday, April 7th GII volunteered at the National Food Bank located in Washington, DC to help with sorting donated food products. The club came in full force to help in this endeavor.  We will definitely keep this in our rotation of community outreach events.

Adopt-A-Road

We are happy to broadcast our newest initiative to support our community.  Through the Adopt-A-Road program in Prince George’s County, GII officially adopted a portion of Duley Station Road, Upper Marlboro, MD.

We have the road from Old Indian Head Highway to 13103 Duley Station Rd.  This road is on the regular route of our weekly Trash Talking Thursday rides.  So now when they ask, “who owns the roads?” you can let them know GII owns it - metaphorically and now in actuality.

We will need volunteers to assist with the clean up 3 - 4 times a year, so please stay on the lookout for road clean-up dates throughout the year. >We want to show up in full force so that the local residents can see how the cycling community is really more than just riding.

Bike Giveaway

Working with Mr. Green, Principal of Mattaponi Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD, we gave away 5 bicycles to deserving kids who excelled in academics.  The bike giveaway included educating the children on bicycle safety and riding. We will also hold a bike rodeo to continue educating children on bikes.

"The Road to Success" Scholarship

Using the money raised from the GII photo sales, GII was able to honor race team member Aiden Boone with a $2,000 scholarship in recognition of his achievement and efforts in cycling.   Aiden is attending the University of Virginia college with plans to be an orthopedic doctor in the future.

Coat Drive

As an annual initiative between October and January, GII holds a coat drive to provide new coats to those in need of protection from the elements.   As we shift over to Autumn, as cyclists, we can't help but think about winter being right around the corner.  If you've ever ridden your bike in the cold, you know how unforgiving the chill can be.  Some organizations that have benefited from the coat drive are Willing Helpers Society and the Angel's Watch Shelter.

Toy Drive

We know that it takes a village to orchestrate a toy drive and it's because of the generous hearts and donations from club members that make it possible.  The greatest gift of all is letting the youth and those in need know they have been remembered and are cared about in a special way.   The toy drive kicks off in November and ends in December with the Ugly Sweater Ride.  Toys have been delivered to hundreds of families by way of various organizations to distribute to homes in need such as Cottage City Police Department, Willing Helper's Society, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington (St. Sebastian and Fortitude Housing).
