Community Outreach: Adopt-A-Road

We are happy to broadcast our newest initiative to support our community.  Through the Adopt-A-Road program in Prince George’s County, GII officially adopted a portion of Duley Station Road, Upper Marlboro, MD.

We have the road from Old Indian Head Highway to 13103 Duley Station Rd.  This road is on the regular route of our weekly Trash Talking Thursday rides.  So now when they ask, “who owns the roads?” you can let them know GII owns it - metaphorically and now in actuality.

We will need volunteers, so please s
tay on the lookout for road clean-up dates throughout 2023.  Thank you to Oliver Hunter for coordinating this effort.

Coat DriveThe Coat Drive has been extended into January.  We are accepting donations for all genders and sizes.  They can be brought to any ride for collection.  The last day of the coat drive will be at our MLK Ride on January 23rd.
Toy DrivePlease bring a new toy to donate for a child during the holidays through GII’s Toy Drive.  The last day to bring your toy is December 18th at the Ugly Sweater Ride.  For information about the ride, please RSVP on Meetup.

Race Team

Following a successful GII Race Interest Meeting in October, the GII Race Team has established its 2022/2023 GII Race Interest Cohort.  The group consists of 18 women and men who are enthusiastically putting in work on and off the bike to get stronger, become more knowledgeable, and learn to work together.  Much of this work is being done on the Race Team’s Winter Training rides, a series of weekly rides aimed at helping our budding racers develop the base fitness and skills they’ll need to be competitive during the upcoming race season.

The team is also proud to announce its new 2023 Race Team Leadership:

Anthony Carter, Race Team Director
Ashli Savoy, Women’s Team Captain
Derick Martin, Men’s Team Captain
Lawanda Benefield, Treasurer
Tyrone Spady, Secretary
Terri Cooper, Community Outreach Director
Kim Mason, Club/Race Team Liaison

Lastly, we want to thank Falecia Stuckey (Women’s Team Captain Emerita) for her leadership, service and dedication to the team.

GII Board of Directors

We would like to announce our newest member to the GII board, Natasha Bramble, our Community Outreach Director.  Natasha is coming to the team with a lot of ideas that she is interested in to help improve club visibility in the community, youth initiatives, and partnering with community leaders.

We would like to thank Oliver Hunter for serving in this role for the last couple of years.  He has made a great contribution with coordinating the annual Coat/Toy Drives and most recently, the Adopt-A-Road initiative.

We are still looking for club members to take on the Board roles of Secretary and Communications Director.  Please send an email to info@giibike.org if you are interested along with a description of your ideas for the club.

Backyard Boogie Planning Committee

First planning meeting for the 2023 Backyard Boogie is scheduled for Thursday, December 15 at 6:30pm.   RSVP on Meetup for the Zoom Link. Anyone who wants to help out can join.

We are starting the planning for the Backyard Boogie 2023 weekend.  We gathered a lot of lessons learned and are looking to make the next one bigger and better than before.  Pulling off just one eventful weekend is a lot of planning in advance.  We need volunteers to help plan it over three phases.

Phase 1 “Foundation Roles” needed from now until about March 2023:

  1. Sponsorship Team:  Lead the effort to obtain financial support and product support.
  2. Location Team: Evaluate locations for all three days.
  3. Community Team: Identify a charity to associate with the event and identify ways to incorporate children and families into the event.

Phase 2 "Journey" Roles needed from about February until June 2023:

  1. Route Planners: Plan the routes for days 1 and 2 of the weekend.
  2. Vendor Manager:  Solicit vendors for food and merchandise for the days needed.
  3. Rest Stop Planner:  Plan the logistics, snacks, and drinks for each rest stop.
  4. Hospitality Team: Think of everything we need to be good hosts for people coming from out of town before, during, and after the event each day.
  5. Marketing Team:  Figure out how to get the word out to everyone.

Phase 3 “Implementation Team” needed in August.  Volunteers will be requested in May.

Upcoming: Ugly Sweater Ride

Join us on Sunday, December 18th for our 4th Annual Ugly Sweater Ride.  The ride is a parade paced ride suitable for most levels of riders.  The 15-mile route will take us through the local communities of Waldorf.  Come in your ugliest holiday sweater, bring a friend or two, and meet us at Nips Juice in Waldorf to roll at 11am.

We will be giving a prize to the person with the best ugly sweater and a prize to the person with the most festive bike decorations.

This is the last day to bring a new toy for our toy drive.  Go to the Meetup site for more information.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Ride Highlight: Pedal with the Pros

A group of GII club members traveled to Miami, Florida for the Level Up Cycling Movement Pedal with the Pros. Although they anticipated a weekend of riding with pros Justin Williams, Rahsaan Bahati, and members of the Miami Blazers, there was a hiccup preventing the named pros from showing.  The weekend wasn’t a bust because they not only enjoyed cycling in warm weather surrounded by beaches and palm trees, but they were also able to fellowship with cyclists from around the country.  They enjoyed the Pro-Table talk where our local Speedy Butterfly, Azyra Franklin, spoke on her cycling opportunity in Belgium.  GII Race Team Director, Anthony Carter, represented the club at the Leadership meeting where he was able to take away helpful information on building the community. Overall, the group experienced great rides, scenic routes, awesome weather, and fantastic fellowship. We can’t wait to collaborate with Level Up in the future.
